We were given three days of our school lives -- four and a half hours total -- to focus on our environment, how its being messed up by us humans, and how we can speak out to make a difference. Here's what we did....
Day 1
We played the ecosystem game Everyone sat or stood in a circle. Each of us took a card with a part of the ecosystem in Berkeley in it. The person with the Sun card started with the ball of string and tossed it to someone who is somehow connected to the Sun... a tree? A robin? Whatever we think. The ball of string continued to be passed until everyone was holding on to the string. We just created a Web of Life! This is our ecosystem. Now, imagine a human does something that hurts one of us. Maybe a farmer sprays pesticides on her field. Who feels that first? Insects, probably. If we're an insect, we wiggle the string. If we're connected to the insect and feel the wiggle, we wiggle the string. Pretty soon everyone's wiggling. Wow, we discover everything's connected! |
We listed our favorite ideas
We made a poster of our top ideas, one in each classroom. There were alot of great ideas, but we did our best to come up with one idea for the whole class.
One classroom mostly cared about plastic pollution, especially in the ocean. |
The other classroom really cared about animals, especially endangered species, losing habitat like when forests get cut or oceans get polluted, and chemicals that harm animals. |
Day 2
Day 3
We made our tools for change!
